New event to talk about innovations in athletics

Published on Newsplex

The Tom Tom Founders Festival is holding all kinds of new events this year, including the just-announced Innovations in Athletics event that will take place April 14 at the Paramount Theater.

This event will feature Bronco Mendenhall, the new University of Virginia head football coach; Michele Madison, UVA’s field hockey head coach; and Chris Long, defensive end for the New England Patriots.

The discussion will cover advances in training, nutrition, coaching, medicine and equipment, as well as what all these mean for the athletes of the future.

“Sports are one of the biggest facets of American life, but the innovations inside of sports are not always widely known by the general public,” said Paul Beyer, founder and director of TTFF. “Though the Innovations in Athletics event, we wanted to take a behind-the-scenes look at the advances in sports and their broader impacts on society with some of the premier players and coaches working today.”

For example, GPS tracking and heart-rate-monitoring devices have allowed coaches to monitor their players’ speed, distance, movements and well-being.

Tickets for this event can be purchased starting Tuesday, $5 for students and $10 for the general public. Tickets purchased at the door will be $15.
