From 2012 to 2017, James Fallows, a 35-year veteran of The Atlantic’s national correspondence team, and Deborah Fallows, a theoretical linguist whose work has been published by Slate, National Geographic, and The New York Times, visited over 50 cities across the country chasing what they describe as a creative wave of civic renewal happening under the nose of national politics. These stories are stunning and beautiful—and have only been magnified in their significance by the Covid-19 pandemic.
